High Quits Rates, Poaching: U.S. Firms Are Plagued by Turnover
- dv_dt 5y agoThis is what businesses signed themselves up for when they have no training, in-house or external, no pensions, no longevity bonuses/benefits, no job guarantees, and often no regular cost of living raises, and rare to no raises or promotions for that matter.
- AnimalMuppet 5y agoDon't forget encroaching on employees' personal time, management that is anywhere from clueless to abusive, and work that is boring and often meaningless. People want something better than that. The perfect time to switch is when there's a worker shortage. It's a competitive advantage to be a place that people want to work at.

- nine_zeros 5y agoOffer more money and better recognition. If your middle managers are unwilling to do so - despite the company needing it - fire your middle managers. Save that money and hire the employees you need.
- AtlasBarfed 5y agoAmerican corporations are all about economics and free market when it benefits them: remove regulation, remove trade barriers, remove taxes, destabilize this government, relocate these pesky indiginous peoples. But if it doesn't benefit them, they immediately shed the religious robes and immediately start lobbying the government for exclusionary barriers, blocking regulation. And if your demand for workers outstrips supply and costs rise? Oh no, there is a crisis that must be managed by the government, or brand workers as lazy, but whatever you do, don't offer more pay. Well, unless you are an in-demand mighty executive, then your massive options bonuses are fully justified for your esteemed talents. Oh your corporation was run aground? They are desperately needed to retain your talents while the ship is evacuated. Corporations are bizarre little totalitarian pyramids. I can only imagine a true perfectly-responsive economic organization would realize on a per-worker basis their economic benefit and provide commensurate reward should some salaryman produce millions in revenue/profit. Instead they hand out plaques.
- nine_zeros 5y agoTo be fair, American startup culture has many good characteristics. Independence, worker driven product development, some good management practices, at will employment - a good thing, keeps vested interests on their toes. Where America failed is healthcare being tied to jobs. At will employment must come with total freedom in life. Unfortunately a lot of workers did not jump ship often enough for management to feel the repercussions simply because they were afraid of consequences to healthcare. If healthcare were separated, many knowledge workers would simply quit the next day. They've got the money - they don't need to listen to a bumbling empire builder who only cares about themselves.
- pjbeam 5y agoWhen you can leave an already lucrative job for a 100% increase by passing a 4-9 round loop.. why wouldn't you?
