I use my own password manager which uses encryption methods and file integrity measures that I've carefully refined over the past 20+ years. It allows me to recover individual password entries even if a password file has been heavily corrupted and makes automatic backups every time a new entry is stored.
Since it is a single point of entry and password managers are the #1 target of attack, I only use it for less important sites, though. I deal with user account access, encrypted disk images, and access to online banking separately by memorizing passphrases.
So in a nutshell I agree. If I'd use a 3rd party password manager, then only one that is open source and whose source code I have inspected, and in the amount of time this takes I could write my own anyway.
