I'm surprised that mobile phone processing power still isn't great enough (between RAM/CPU/etc) that compiling JavaScript into native code is necessary for optimal performance. I think we'd need to ascertain how much of a 'performance haircut' other JS engines would take. If it's appreciably minimal, there's certainly room for competition, even when accounting for the disadvantage.
- javagram 5y agoFront end frameworks like react and angular have bloated CPU requirements compared to jQuery sites of old because they expect to be run on fast, modern browser JS engines with JIT. I doubt any pure interpreter could be competitive in performance on the average website.
- TingPing 5y agoDisabling the JIT can easily be a 5x slowdown.
