I think the people who were posting "learn to write good readable code" weren't disagreeing with the idea that reading code is a skill so much as they were calling out a comparison between: a) coders who can read bad code and who also write bad code b) coders who can't read bad code but who write good code In that case I would always choose to work with person b. tl;dr I don't think that they were disagreeing but adding on another important point
