"Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit:
There must be in-groups whom the law protectes but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.
There is nothing more or else to it, and there never has been, in any place or time.”
—Frank Wilhoit (the composer, not the political scientist)

- KorematsuFredt 5y agoPerfect summary but I do not think it is fair to generalize this for "conservatives". This is true for entire American politics. The progressives for example come up with laws that harass their non-voters in rural areas for no good reason. A lot of these laws are around climate change and guns and about minding your own business.

- jfrunyon 5y agoAh, right, trying to prevent the destruction of the only planet we live on is "no good reason"
- KorematsuFredt 5y agoYou are mistaking intentions for outcomes. California's higher energy prices are in the name of climate change but disproportionately impacts the "outer groups" who live in colder climates and need to burn fuel to stay warm. Where as tesla driving coastal "insiders" don't have to worry too much about it.
- jfrunyon 5y ago> The progressives for example come up with laws that harass their non-voters in rural areas for no good reason. A lot of these laws are around climate change Keep moving those goalposts, bud.
- KorematsuFredt 5y agoI have no need to move anything, the argument is very clear and simple. If your biases stop you from getting it I am not in the business of changing opinions.
- dmingod666 5y agoThis definition applies to both parties tbf.
- a4isms 5y ago"The USA is also a one-party state, but with typical American extravagance, they have two of them.” —Julius Nyerere, Tanzanian anti-colonial activist, politician, and political theorist
- dmingod666 5y agoI generally like to put it as having just 1 more political party than China.

- feoren 5y agoAnyone who still parrots the "both sides!" argument after January 6 (scratch that, after the last five years (scratch that, after Nixon and Reagan)) is so deeply and lazily uneducated that you must have intentionally tried to avoid even a single rational thought about the subject over your entire life. Please don't vote.
- dmingod666 5y agoVery nuanced, spot on assessment :D - very impressed. Don't worry I will probably never vote in your country's election.
- feoren 5y agoYou want to talk to me about "nuanced" when you spout off the laziest possible take on politics, that "both sides" are just always the same? All politicians are liars, all government is bad, the world is simple, yadda yadda? That is 100% devoid of any nuance whatsoever. The "both sides are the same" argument is disinformation just as harmful as Ivermectin curing COVID. It has never been and never will be true, in any situation, ever, and believing/spreading it is actively harmful to making the world a better place. The Confederacy and the Union were not the same. The Ottomans and Armenians were not the same in 1915. Police officers murdering black people and BLM protestors spray-painting buildings are not the same. The group that wants people to get vaccinated to stop the spread of a deadly virus is not the same as the group that intentionally coughs on people and throws temper tantrums in Walmart. There is a group of people in America whose entire political viewpoint is centered around hurting the right people. Around making sure those people are disenfranchised, imprisoned, enslaved, and/or killed. That's the main political driver of everything they do: harm the right people. This group votes overwhelmingly (if not unanimously) conservative, and is a surprisingly large portion of the entire conservative party. This does not exist on the other side. At all. That doesn't mean everything the Democratic party does is good, or even that there is one unified set of policies in the party. But there simply is no "out group" liberals are trying to bind by law, but not protect. It does not exist. So fuck your "both sides!" argument, forever. You should be ashamed of yourself for spreading disinformation.
