My solution for this problem I figured out in 2015 is a satphone on a monthly low-minutes plan. My Inmarsat IsatPhone 2 last for weeks on standby mode, and has something like 8 hours of talk time. I recharge it maybe once or twice year when I think to. The latency isn't even that bad – maybe 250ms – for a 44k mile round trip.
And when I first got it, it was immensely fun trying to get the thing working as a USB dial-up modem which I did and then managed to get both my Mac and my old HP 95LX talking to it. Free incoming texts, too.
