Only Three Countries in the World (Officially) Still Use the Imperial System
- lanna 5y agoMyanmar units of measurement: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myanmar_units_of_measurement https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myanmar_units_of_measurement This gives a better global picture: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metrication#Chronology_and_status_of_conversion_by_country/region https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metrication#Chronology_and_sta...
- aaron695 5y agoSkipping the NYT lies of "Britain Signals Intent to Revert to the Imperial System" Britian is removing making it illegal to (only) use imperial in a store. Metric Martyrs - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metric_Martyrs https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metric_Martyrs This is famously around Steve Thoburn who sold bananas by the pound. He got done by illegal weighing equipment. Which was illegal because it couldn't be checked, since it was imperial. Yes, everyone should use metric like everyone should (be forced to) speak English. But looking at the far future when things are better, different languages and different weighting systems are what make the world interesting.
- cracauer 5y agoSurprising. You wouldn't normally think of Liberia and Myanmar having their shit together.
- kalleboo 5y agoI presume this is in reference to the UK re-allowing imperial measurements, meanwhile touting a post-Brexit "Global Britain" https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/scales-of-justice-tilt-towards-the-metric-martyr-638vfn655 https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/scales-of-justice-tilt-to...
- hilbert42 5y agoWith retrograde thinking like that it's little wonder the UK lost its empire.
- France_is_bacon 5y agoYeah, so what? Pretty much the entire world uses time as developed by Sumerians 5,000 years ago, the sexigesimal system. Base 60. That's why there are 60 seconds in a minute and 60 minutes in an hour. Also, since the year is about 360 days, the Sumerians divided up a circle into 360 degrees. I have developed a system of 20 hours in a day, and 100 minutes in an hour, and 100 seconds in a minute. But NONE of those countries has adopted my more modern method and continue with a 5,000 archaic system. If anyone wants to buy clocks or wristwatches with my new time, let me know.
