>“We call for the immediate closure of ICDC and reparations for all the survivors of ICDC and defunding of ICE,” says Bhatt. “We also demand that all the women involved in the investigation into medical abuses at ICDC be offered assistance to allow them to pursue immigration relief in the U.S. and address the damage caused by the human rights abuses they suffered”
Sounds a lot like the issue with schools and police departments where no one ever wants to raise taxes to better fund them to improve the quality of their services but come election time, the yammering never stops about how low the quality of schools has become.
They don’t want to close ICE. They want to drastically increase funding to it or a replacement to stop these kinds of malpractices, they just don’t know it yet.
- jasonwatkinspdx 5y agoNo, a very large swath of critics of ICE, myself included, want it straight up abolished. The US did just fine for most of its life without ICE and with quite lax border enforcement. ICE's budget is not the issue. Give them more money and you'll just get even more of the same. The root problem here is not enough voters care about what's happening because of who it's happening too, and sadly a non trivial minority of voters are enthusiastic supporters of abuse in this context.

Someone has to be in charge of the border though. There was an “ICE” before ICE. It’s fine to abolish and replace it but that’s not really going to solve the underfunding problem. In fact, abolishing and reforming ICE is practically the origin story of ICE to begin with and clearly no one is happy with how that turned out. Why would you want to write a sequel to that?
- jasonwatkinspdx 5y agoI am familiar with the history. What we had before was very different, and in my view superior. Going even further back in history, the statement "someone has to be in charge of the border" is in fact false. What justification do you have that ICE is underfunded, or that more funding will eliminate the systemic abuses rather than amplify them?
- hjek 5y agoYea, you can just, like, not have the border. People made it up in the first place. Interesting how borders are taken for granted. Where I live, there was recently a discussion about where to put the new immigration removal centre / pre-deportation prison facility. People were going all out NIMBY, arguing over which part of the country it should be in. Not building it was unthinkable.
