I just took a cross-country trip and rented cars in 3 different states. My experience was fine, and the prices were about normal, if not cheap. I'm sure there will be problems, but it's very possible that the media will be exaggerating for headlines. It's not like a rental car will just fall apart if it's kept and maintained for an extra year or two. They're made of metal, not paper mache, and replacement parts are still available.
