Feds charge 138 w $1.4B fraud involving telemedicine, Covid, opioids
- randycupertino 5y agoHaving worked in telemedicine, it is extremely susceptible to fraud. One examples in one of my old clients is that "family members" of the actual patient would call in vs the patient themselves. Sometimes drug seekers, sometimes good-intentioned wives pretending to be their husband because the husband himself was too stubborn or ashamed to seek out care directly (happened with older patients with constipation). We generally would have the MD call back and demand to speak to the patient directly. The loosening of the telemedicine reimbursements during COVID were necessary due to lockdowns but even at the time when they were happening, it was in the back of my head that this was going to correspond with an uptick in fraud. Sobering and rehab centers are NOTORIOUS for being hotbeds of fraud, reminds me of the recent case of a chain of them in Los Angeles where a provider stole over $175 million. https://www.healthcarefinancenews.com/news/owner-los-angeles-rehab-center-pleads-guilty-175-million-healthcare-fraud https://www.healthcarefinancenews.com/news/owner-los-angeles...
