Freedom of speech should have specific limitations around hate speech. Hate speech should be defined as racism and sexism.
- GPerson 5y agoWho gets to define what racism and sexism are?
- gremloni 5y agoA government agency with specific reviews periodically. Alternatively something akin to the chamber of commerce— a public private partnership.
- mythrwy 5y agoAh so exposing government corruption is hate speech then!
- gremloni 5y agoThat’s like saying exposing commercial corruption can be a crime since the chamber of commerce is in charge of it. Agencies exist for a reason.
- gameman144 5y agoHrmm, I don't think this carries through -- chambers of commerce are private organizations, so they don't carry the threat of governmental overreach behind them.
- gremloni 5y agoThey absolutely do. Hence why I used the public private partnership moniker.
- GPerson 5y agoWhat happens when the group with opposing views to you defines racism and sexism in their favorite way?
- gremloni 5y agoThat’s why there would be an agency responsible for the definition. Edge cases could go through the courts and trials for resolutions.
- Ekaros 5y agoI could accept this if there was clear test. Take a speech considered hate speech, substitute any words describing single group with those of others. If it is still considered hate speech give out punishment.
- gremloni 5y agoThe baseline for hate and its repercussions are not the same for every group so I don’t think a simple substitution or role reversal makes total sense. I’m with you on a clear test with some sort of normalization function applied that takes into consideration the current state of society.
