Why are they suing this guy? I dont think that there is any dispute that the chemichals had been seized by lebanese authorities, so anything that happened to the cargo after that is their full responsibility.
If a thief steals my car am I somehow liable for him crashing it?
Absolutely ridiculous.
- hef19898 5y agoIANAL, but international trade law can be a bitch in that regard. The article is written pretty one sided so. We are talking about an international chemicals trading firm(s), operating in Eastern Europe, using off shore companies and selling fertilizer to Africa. Eastern Europe is a great place for that kind of production (environmental regulation is less severe, old factories are plenty and cheap), Africa is a good market for that stuff. And which global business isn't using off shore companies? Also, cargo is getting seized, with ships, over debt and safety issues all the time. Just who carries the risk for storage of said cargo I don't know. We are going to find out so, it might seem.
- candiodari 5y agoI don't really think it matters. If you do the damage of a small nuclear bomb in the middle of an expensive part of the city ... it would take a conglomerate to pay for the damage done here, never mind the cost in lives. And one thing they told me in a legal course was "you can't get blood from a stone, and trying too hard can be pretty expensive".
