Ask HN: Bose QC35 IIs – replace the battery?
My Bose QuietComfort 35 IIs are about 3 years old now, and the battery is starting to get rubbish. I get about an hour if using noise-cancelling and the microphone, 3 hours for audio only.
I contacted Bose to ask if they service them, but the answer is no. They offered a replacement I could buy (with a discount, but still more expensive than most places are selling them anyway).
But I really object to buying a new set of headphones when these ones just need a new battery.
Has anyone tried replacing the battery? I've seen a few videos, but it seems quite difficult. Since I can still use them with a cable, I'm worried about destroying them entirely.
- giorgioz 5y agoA quick Google search found this DIY replacement of the battery on ifixit.com https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Bose+QuietComfort+35+Battery+Replacement/134337 https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Bose+QuietComfort+35+Battery+Re... There are also a bunch of videos on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ih5aIHw14QU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ih5aIHw14QU
- blowski 5y agoI mentioned in the submission above that I’ve watched a couple of videos, but I’m looking for someone I can talk to about it.
- giorgioz 5y agoIn which city are you? I can try my magic hacker google searching skills searching for repair shops in your proximity
- blowski 5y agoFrom the FAQs: > Be kind. Don't be snarky. Have curious conversation; don't cross-examine. Please don't fulminate. Please don't sneer, including at the rest of the community.
- giorgioz 5y agoI was genuinely asking you in which city you are because if you want to find a physical repair shop that's relasted to where you live and I can only help you in the search if I know that.
- blowski 5y agoI’ll give you the benefit of the doubt. But you can be sure that saying anything to the effect of “let me Google that for you” will always look snarky, especially on a pretty technical forum. And snark is not welcome here, as you can see in the guidelines. Your other comment here is much less snarky and much more welcome. So, thank you, I’ll give that a try.
- giorgioz 5y agoFrom ifixit is possible to purchase the replacement battery for 30$ https://www.ifixit.com/Store/Miscellanous/Bose-QuietComfort-35-Battery/IF388-004?o=1 https://www.ifixit.com/Store/Miscellanous/Bose-QuietComfort-... You could find a smartphone repair shop and ask them if they could do that repair with you providing them the guide and replacement component: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Bose+QuietComfort+35+Battery+Replacement/134337 https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Bose+QuietComfort+35+Battery+Re...
