It's a religion in Germany. Im French, so biased pro-nuclear. God just talking to a German abt nuclear power not being only about Fukushima and Tchernobyl puts them in a state of existensial anger you rarely see in these otherwise rational people :D
- pestatije 5y agoSo your saying french nukes are definitely, positively, hundred percent, absolutely sure, bet yr granma's health, better than jap ones.
- nix23 5y agoYou cannot generate power with a nuke, just grilling a sausage (at the right distance), and japan never had nukes, so yes french nukes are more nuk'y then "jap" ones.
- nix23 5y agoAnd stop unlimited speed on highways is also a good way to make them angry....oh and telling them that belgium has the better beer (which is true btw).
- foepys 5y agoGermans talk all high and mighty when it comes to US gun culture. But mention putting a speed limit on the Autobahn like every single other neighbor of Germany already has and they treat you like you just killed their children.
- nautilius 5y agoAutobahns are safe, safer than speed restricted U.S. highways, and certainly much safer than guns being readily available. No kid ever accidentally found a no speed limit Autobahn in their parent's bedroom and accidentally killed himself or a friend with it, nor did anyone ever get angry and no-speed-limited someone they didn't like, no-speed-limited-Autobahns can't be brought to insurrections, drive-by-Autobahning is unheard of, drunk Autobahning is severly punished and will result in you losing your right to Autobahn. Conversely, I absolutely advocate regulating access to guns in the U.S. like access to no-speed-limited Autobahns to have a apple-to-apple discussion about this: i.e. with mandatory months long required training, strict tests, and being easily revocable for offenses. Autobahning is only allowed using registered and insured devices that have to pass strict technical tests every two years, are always visible and cannot be concealed, cannot be made at home, and have to show markings that make them and the owner easily identifiable.
- ephbit 5y agoAwesome :D .. how often do you actually vocalise "Autobahn" as a verb when other people might hear? ... have mercy with your fellows or some might laugh their asses off raises finger
- wrycoder 5y agoWell, tell that to the people who are regulating (not) [0] the gun murderers in Chicago. Note that Chicago has some of the strictest gun regulations in the US. They just don’t enforce them effectively, for some reason. [0] https://heyjackass.com/ https://heyjackass.com/
- nautilius 5y agoSure, feel free to pass these suggestions around.
- Ajef 5y agoI understand that your post is probably supposed to be very provocative but I hope you realize that it's simply stereotypes your referring too. Three of the six largest parties are currently campaigning for a general speed limit[1]. And regarding beer it's obviously personal taste - I'm german and prefer a polish beer brands to most german brands and theres a danish one I'm particularly fond of too. - nix23 5y ago>very provocative but I hope you realize that it's simply stereotypes your referring too Take it easy, being Swiss i know that our "normal" beer tastes like cow piss, and we have a "humor"-taste of a cold stone, and i like english and french cheese much more. I like stereotypes, it's a good way not to take everything serious or even "very provocative", we should be proud of them, and have a good lough about them. BTW: Bavaria should be it's own country, and Switzerland is so green and clean because we have so many Porsche SUV's (well that's actually true...not the green...the SUV's)
- Ajef 5y agoI hope my use of the word "provocative" didn't cause you to get flagged here. It was provocative enough for me to respond, which I don't consider a bad thing. I'm surprised of the harsh moderating here on HN and will try to use my words more carefully.
- Ajef 5y agoI'm german and it's not only about disasters such as Fukushima and Tschernobl. Those may have shaped public opinion a lot but there is more. There is not a single in production long term storage for nuclear waste in Europe[1],[2]. According to [2] the only country building a long term storage for nuclear waste is Finnland. For me the problem of nuclear waste is a big factor in regard to my opinion of nuclear fission plants. I'm sure the designs are a lot safer nowadays and we don't have natural catastrophes that pose similar threats to these power plants here in central europe and yet I oppose them because of the nuclear waste. [Edit]: In regard to coal - coal has been a large source of energy for Germany since the industrialization because we have access to it. Germany has been so dependant on it that in-case of being cut off from oil there are considerations to convert coal into gasoline. Because of this dependency it was subsidized for decades. It's not surprising that with wind energy having a low in 2021, coal is currently in first place again. The current goal seems to phase coal-power out by 2035-2038 which I hope will happen sooner rather than later. I think the only reason the phasing-out of coal is actually happening in Germany is the prospect of less dependency on oil (with more electric vehicles on the horizon).
- fsflover 5y agoNuclear waste is a solved problem [0]. It takes very little space and storage technology is good enough since a long time. It's just a lack of the political will. [0] https://whatisnuclear.com/waste.html https://whatisnuclear.com/waste.html
- merb 5y agoI'm not sure but this site is NOT convining, especially since it's bascially dismisses all the points as stupid. besides that it didn't give a single solution how reactive waste can be stored over thousands of years. in fact the site talks about it, but it never gives a solution. btw. most people never think that nuclear the technology is a bad idea. the problem ALWAYS are humans. you can't guarante storage of something toxic for thousands of years. humans are stupid and greedy. you can't build a safe nuclear facility because some greedy people will always try to save a few dollars here and there for absolute no reason. germany even tried to build a few reactors since the 90's but political parties and greedy managers wanted to force it and skipped important stuff, which exactly shows why nuclear is not an option. people will always screw the safety to save a few bucks. always.
