Is that the question you take away? Mine is...
What would our world be like if it were illegal to lie to or otherwise obstruct Congress?
- inetknght 5y ago> if it were illegal to lie to or otherwise obstruct Congress? Not only is it illegal to lie to Congress but it should be illegal for corporations to lie to anyone in public statements.
- na85 5y ago>Not only is it illegal to lie to Congress Only for the plebs. As James Clapper demonstrated, there is a separate set of laws for the elites.
- dragonwriter 5y ago> As James Clapper demonstrated, there is a separate set of laws for the elites. Surely, the banner example here id Brett Kavanaugh, whose lies in his Circuit Court confirmation hearing were punished with a seat on the Supreme Court.
- na85 5y agoPerhaps; I'm Canadian and have never heard of Kavanaugh.
- Chris2048 5y agoabout what, specifically?
- dragonwriter 5y agoAbout his role in the Bush Administration’s torture policy.
- Infinitesimus 5y agoThat would be hard to enforce given that politicians lie pretty often....
- KarlKemp 5y agoHaha, funny. But not true. At least in the times before you-know-who, politicians went through the wildest contortions to avoid lying. Yes, there's Clinton and a few other fun examples. But they are sparse. What happens is that people use the term "lie" for all sorts of disappointing behaviour that, however, isn't a lie. Example: Obama said he'd close Guantanamo within two years or something like that. Is that a lie? No, probably not: "I will.." always expresses an intention to attempt something. It's perfectly believable that he had both the intention to do it, as well as confidence that it can be done. We intuitively understand all that in everyday life. When someone shows up 15 minutes late, they didn't "lie" when you agreed on the time.
