COVID aside, the number of line of duty deaths seems a lot higher than I expected. At least given the focus in news and social media these last few years on notable incidents of police killing unarmed civilians in non-dangerous situations, I assumed the police themselves are almost never killed from job related hazards. I wonder how these figures compare to the number of police or number of calls/stops/whatever they handle.

The situations where they kill civilians in "non-dangerous" situations is because they have to always respond like it is a dangerous situation (I am NOT justifying these killings or saying they are okay - just saying why it can happen). Somebody can pull a gun or a knife in less than a second. I'm certainly no police advocate but you have to at least have some understanding of the context around their job. For example if they pull over a robbery or murder suspect they might be the only thing in the way between freedom and decades in jail - that is a very dangerous position for the cop.
