How can I take down a Chrome extension that is malicous
My school just required a new extension for math and I find that my files whether just video games or full programs just go missing and I have to often reinstall, I've read reviews on the extension and it seems that It has a tendency to just delete files whether personal or even school related files, It needs to go, I've complained to school officials and nothing has happened. The extension in question is Proctorio.
- lelelelelal 5y agolink to extension. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/proctorio/fpmapakogndmenjcfoajifaaonnkpkei https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/proctorio/fpmapako...

- Nicksil 5y ago3,000,000+ users, 1 star. I kind of recognize the name; doesn't invoke a pleasant feeling. I don't have much useful to provide, but I see a "Report abuse" link next to the "Website" link. You can try that but then you'd be at the mercy of Google "support" which invokes a similar feeling of dread.
- lelelelelal 5y agoThanks, I've already reported abuse but no response from google yet.
- Nicksil 5y ago>Thanks, I've already reported abuse but no response from google yet. Just refreshed my memory on this company. It's just awful. I'm genuinely sorry you're being subjected to this abusive software. I wish you the best.
- lelelelelal 5y agoI think my best bet at keeping all my files should be to only have it installed when it is required and then as soon as the test is over to just uninstall it. I could be wrong though
- agustif 5y agoIf you have the patience, I would recommend spinning up a VM so you can isolate your test envirorments, you can keep the goddamn extension installed there for future tests, but you only use that VM for testing, and spin it off and never touch it again until next test. since it's a VM, it shouldn't have access to your system to delete files Little google found this on reddit might be helpful: https://www.reddit.com/r/UBC/comments/j0gq1m/psa_forced_to_use_proctorio_then_run_a_virtual/ https://www.reddit.com/r/UBC/comments/j0gq1m/psa_forced_to_u...
- tdeck 5y agoNot sure if this helps but someone did a bit of reverse engineering on this plugin: https://thomwiggers.nl/post/proctorio/#:~:text=The%20virtual%20machine,can%20be%20seen%20by%20Proctorio https://thomwiggers.nl/post/proctorio/#:~:text=The%20virtual....
- rejectfinite 5y agoSpin up a local VM and run chrome + the extension in that. I personally prefer VMWare Workstation or Player. https://www.vmware.com/products/workstation-player.html https://www.vmware.com/products/workstation-player.html Windows 10 can be downloaded from https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows10 https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows10 and does not need activation.
- jpadkins 5y agoNo one answered the OP question, so here you go: 1) Get the requisite skills and experience to go into a career in Trust & Safety 2) Apply for a job at Google for T&S like this one https://careers.google.com/jobs/results/106261460146889414/ https://careers.google.com/jobs/results/106261460146889414/ 3) Transfer into the Chrome extension T&S team 4) Follow the internal process to ban this extension If you are truly dedicated, I believe you can do it!
- codingdave 5y agoWhich school officials? Odds are, these things come down from the district, not the leaders at your specific school. I'd contact the district's IT department. If that fails, I'd bring it up at the next school board meeting.
- k4ch0w 5y agoI'd use a sandbox for Chrome then. You can use docker to spin up a temporary Chromium instance and then delete it after. It would have no visibility into your host filesystem. You can also just use a VM.
