I had the opportunity and privilege to co-mentor the author (Mina) on this project as she did her summer internship. This project was very exciting to me because i'm an extensive walker (https://www.strava.com/athletes/3569114 https://www.strava.com/athletes/3569114) and often did it in pitch darkness (post work commute in winters.) I realize how impractical it is to walk in the dark and how much of a privilege it is for me to do it w/o worry. My wife would never do this, so this type of project is quite nice! There are plans to service-ify this and have an app-wrapper to make it practical to use.
