I remember reading a Soviet sci-fi novel some time in the 80s in which a pillar of super-rigid exotic matter escapes from a superdeep borehole and causes a short-circuit with the Earth's magnetosphere, destroying electric generators worldwide. It's interesting to read about the possible inspiration for that exotic disaster scenario!
