The particular High School I went to was in a town that had just lost it's military base and had turned into a bedroom community for halfway houses. (Places where criminals leaving prison would stay on parole.) This mixed a large number of different gangs together into a single area leading to tons of terrible things. This all trickled down to the kids in the area. Fights involving 10 or more kids were common. Walking home you had to avoid certain times and places where after school fighting would take place. Parks and culverts were DMZs at certain times. Resource officers used pepper spray in crowded hallways where a fight had broken out. Whenever we had a school assembly it was pretty common for a riot to break out. This was the "Good" High School in town. There were two others that were quite a bit worse. Problems with weapons, fires, and such.
