I hope to improve the UX a bit further with a city-search for example. Unfortunately I am lacking a good geocoding API for that.
- wasmitnetzen 5y agoYou could export Wikidata objects if it is good enough for you to cover 99% of all places.
- meteo-jeff 5y agoI was thinking to use the geonames location database and build a simple fuzzy search engine around it. What wikidata objects are you referring to?
- wasmitnetzen 5y agoMaybe human settlement (Q486972) or city/town (Q7930989)? I haven't checked, but I would guess most of them have some coordinate location (P625), especially the bigger ones.
- Leftium 5y agoUltraWeather uses the openweather geocoding API[1]: https://openweathermap.org/api/geocoding-api https://openweathermap.org/api/geocoding-api Pretty generous free tier, and paid options seem pretty reasonable. - tomaskafka 5y agoI recently contributed to https://github.com/tomayac/local-reverse-geocoder https://github.com/tomayac/local-reverse-geocoder - while it's a reverse geocoder, it a ready template for downloading OSM cities data and searching through it.
- alin23 5y agoI've been using the GeoLite2 [0] downloadable database as a fallback for CoreLocation in my macOS app for changing monitor brightness based on the sun position [1]. It works well and with zero maintenance if you use their auto-updating Docker image [2].
