Fortran _is_ dead. I work with it professionally. The tooling is next to non-existent, the compilers are trash, the standards committee is in some weird backwards compatible with FORTRAN 66 circle jerk to the point where you can't have a sane modern revision (think the complete opposite problem as Python 2 -> Python 3). The only reason Fortran is still around is institutional inertia.
