I actually founded /r/fortran as a joke because I thought nobody used it anymore, but it was later adopted by people who in fact use modern FORTRAN. Later I met someone who has a very good job programming in FORTRAN for a 20,000 CPU supercomputer which is used to simulate nuclear explosions. It is in fact a current, relevant language that has specific unique strengths.

- dhosek 5y agoOh man, you just gave me a sense memory of the smell of the Waterloo documentation in the UIC computer lab.
- bodge5000 5y agoWell I didnt want it to come to this, but COBOL it is then... On a serious note, at least right now it is quite a niche language that appears to have more demand than supply, so might still be a good idea. Even better in fact if its at least attempting to be modern
