The Bawdy Graffiti of Pompeii and Herculaneum
- cema 5y agoSomehow the passage of time gives it a modicum of respectability.
- smcleod 5y agoI know right, this one still cracks me up every time I read it: "The one who buggers a fire burns his penis"
- fibonachos 5y agoMade even funnier by the fact that there’s a Reddit sub dedicated to this very topic. /r/dontputyour****inthat I guess penis humor is timeless.
- nelox 5y agoTruely vulgar
- dmix 5y agoThe humour of young men never changes.
- OneTimePetes 5y agoThe moment you realize you are a bred by evolution into a drug addicted mammal, expected to either vanish or develop a ego big enough to mount another mammal and convince the universe that this should go on forever - you are fucked, in the head and possibly in any other regard for a small reward.
- dmix 5y agoThat’s a great way of putting it.
- jayess 5y agoIt's annoying that the original Latin is not provided. I'd love to know the original words used for some of these terms (such as buggering). EDIT: It looks like this link is just a marketing site for a jewellery store. The original that this site stole from is here: https://web.archive.org/web/20170221135226/http://www.pompeiana.org/Resources/Ancient/Graffiti%20from%20Pompeii.htm https://web.archive.org/web/20170221135226/http://www.pompei...
- edflsafoiewq 5y agoHere's a site with the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum: https://db.edcs.eu/epigr/epi_einzel.php?s_sprache=en&p_belegstelle=CIL+04,+02375 https://db.edcs.eu/epigr/epi_einzel.php?s_sprache=en&p_beleg.... Replace the last four digits in the URL with the number before the quote on the site you linked to see the Latin. "Bugger" is probably gonna be "paedico". I do find the whole "Classics scholar translates back-alley graffiti" vibe of the translation hilarious.
