SQL struggles with hierarchical data (trees), which are graphs.

  In practice most hierarchies are shallow (or poorly designed) Country, Province/State, City, Neighborhood/ZIP, Building, Room. 5 jumps to go from planetary to personal. 5 JOINs is not unreasonable.
