Authoritarian or not, the first task for governments is economy, which is the basis of ruling. Economy is basically religion v2.0, like it or not, you have to work with it. That's why even Taliban knows it is important. In the end, you need to have a strong economy, to keep people happy. Authoritarian government does not live in a different universe, they have to obey the physical law of this world.
