Welcome to Cloudintosh
- yjftsjthsd-h 5y agoI know this is such a stereotypical HN comment, but... I can't tell what this is. I tried reading the about page, then the rest; some sort of cloud app platform with branding that I would not want to defend in court.
- jackson1442 5y agoIt looks like some sort of cloud nas? I can’t tell either. The look+feel being like “something-intosh” is waaaay too emphasized. If they just mirrored the design language it’d be one thing, but this seems like it’s _asking_ for a cease and desist.
- BoorishBears 5y agoI don't get how you can miss this so badly? Like I clicked expecting a synergy focused neo-textual presentation vis-à-vis the Macintosh But literally the first line of text my eyes laid on was the explanation, it's cloud "OSX". Clicking on About made it clear the OSX part was just the look and feel, and so did the Apps page. And I mean, it also feels like a bit of parody so that'd be ruined by beating you over the head with "*not actual OSX" everywhere on the oage
- turtlebits 5y agoA web OS isn't the most trivial thing to build, which is why I'm also highly skeptical of what it is. I wouldn't be surprised if the product is terrible and they are leaning on the shiny that is OS X to capture attention.
- BoorishBears 5y agoThat sounds like you're skeptical of the product, but fully aware what it is. I don't see how anyone could say this site isn't telling you what its selling. It's a common problem, but not this time.
- ToFab123 5y agoI tried to watch the first part of the video, but have still no idea what this is about. Something with sharing files.
- sembilan 5y agoWeb based operating system on someone else's computer you can access via browser.
- znpy 5y ago> I can't tell what this is. Joke: it's a way to get sued by apple. The name "cloudintosh" is just a bait. On a more serious note: it reminds me of a pure-in-broswer "operating system" that of course had server-side apis for anything persistent... I played with one a lot of time ago. I just found the name of the thing: it's eyeOS -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EyeOS https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EyeOS
- gjvc 5y agopage font is wrong; should be Garamond with 0.8 aspect ratio
- yjftsjthsd-h 5y agoUsually this would be... Non-constructive, but since they're trying to perfectly rip off MacOS, surely it counts as useful feedback.
- amegahed 5y agoI switched the page font back to Garamond. I had it as Garamond originally but switched to Geneva because I thought it was more readable. Better?
- rovr138 5y agoI'm not sure what's up with all the links not having the right events/effects on them but it's messing with knowing what can be clicked on.
- pronoiac 5y agoFrom the About page, https://cloudintosh.sharedigm.com/#about https://cloudintosh.sharedigm.com/#about > Cloudintosh is a place for you to store, access, and share your digital world using the look and feel of your favorite operating system. It combines a cloud storage system and operating system with a social network so that it’s easy to work with and share your data. It's based upon the Sharedigm cloud OS so it combines a modern cloud OS with the look and feel of your favorite OS. It looks like it's intended to look like a persistent desktop machine you can access from a browser or a mobile app.
- scoopertrooper 5y agoFrom watching their video, it doesn't seem like so complex a system. It's basically airdrop, but over the internet instead of your local network.
- temp8964 5y agoI don't have a problem with the general idea, a full OS experience from the browser, but why would I trust my data with a random company? It would be fine for me to use a CloudWindows from MS, because most my data are already in OneDrive. Or a CloudMac from Apple. But not any other companies.
- beebeepka 5y agoI know what you mean. The devil you know is better than the one you don't. We know for sure these megacorps have been selling or handi6 over all our data for decades. Do we really want some minor league players getting a taste of it? Hell no. Evil has to be concentrated, distilled, and big
- usui 5y agoWatch the intro video, it explains you can host an instance yourself thereby keeping the data to yourself. There's also a setup guide: https://cloudintosh.sharedigm.com/#help/setting-up https://cloudintosh.sharedigm.com/#help/setting-up
- temp8964 5y agoThanks! Selfhosting is a great idea.
- User23 5y agoI would absolutely love a classic Mac OS theme for OS X. Something like the System 6 look. Maybe System 7 if I'm feeling modern.
- areoform 5y agoI made an account, tried it out. It's incredible! I have a question. I can see that I can edit code inside of it. Can I also run a REPL or execute something like node and do web dev on this?
- amegahed 5y agoI've been tinkering with a to mount remote file systems of various kinds using Sharedigm/Cloudintosh. By mounting your web server's code directory as an SFTP file system, it would allow for a nice, intuitive way to view and edit your remote code files. This would make web development a bit more pleasant.
- tiew9Vii 5y agoI have a 100Mbps internet connection. I nearly closed the page thinking it was broken as I sat looking at a blank white screen. Only 10 seconds later as i was moving the cursor to close tab button did it render. On looking the homepage is 11M of artifacts and as it's a single page app nothing is rendered until it's all downloaded. Terrible UX.
- scns 5y agoFacebook downloaded 38MB of JavaScript. Needs to be parsed on a single thread.
- usui 5y agoFor people confused about the functions, it's worth checking out the project this was based on which has a more expansive about page and user data policy: https://sharedigm.com https://sharedigm.com Cloudintosh is more of a frontend theme wrapped over sharedigm.com
- amegahed 5y agoHi. Yes, you've got it. Cloudintosh is a bit of an UX experiment in how to generalize the theming process to allow the UI to be skinnable enough to emulate (and perhaps extend) the environment that you feel comfortable with. Sharedigm's theming system can also roughly emulate WindowsXP, Windows10, and Windows11, Ubuntu etc. The core idea, though is to be able to have a "personal cloud" where the user is able to make those decisions.
- znpy 5y agoIt looks like an in-browser OS. eyeOS used to do something similar, starting from 2005: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EyeOS https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EyeOS
- zhte415 5y agoRight click is disabled. Nice.
- whywhywhywhy 5y agoFor something that the selling point is it looks like MacOS, it doesn't actually look anything like MacOS in the ways that someone who cares about that would care about. People who care about how their OS looks and feels are extremely detail orientated in whats correct and what isn't in their OS. E.g there absolutely should not be in window menus for anything trying to replicate MacOS.
- throwawayswede 5y agoTerribly slow to load, absolutely horrible UX. That moving/flying background windows is beyond horrible, spent 3 seconds trying to understand what this is and then the dizziness started to hit me. That is not to mention that from I saw in the video, it looks like a knockoff mac, and not a very good one either.
- amegahed 5y agoThis is a web OS in the sense that you can build desktop like apps on top of it. I'm currently building a ray tracing application on top of the Sharedigm OS and I imagine that others have applications like this that they'd like to move to the cloud while also preserving a desktop like user experience. Question: If this platform were released as open source or fair source, is there an audience of people that would consider building applications on top of it? It's an appealing idea, but I have a feeling that today, most wouldn't even consider building on top of anything that's not provided by Apple/Google/MS.
- shantnutiwari 5y agoLooks good-- my only question is-- there is no price. Is it free forever? Ad supported? I know you can host your own instance , but what happens if I use the hosted service? How do the devs pay for running costs?
