I have also worked on a pre-syntax highlighting code base with strange conventions to make up for it.
I think my favourite was surrounding each mutex lock/unlock operation with lines of %-characters.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
mutex_lock(&mutex);

- setr 5y agoUnless you have highlighting rules for specific function calls (and share them with your team), I don’t see how it this problem has been solved. Your mutex_lock(&mutex) will be colored exactly the same as any arbitrary foo(&bar), so you’d still want to call it out somehow.
