I can tell you which ridiculous reason I chose to switch to C++ after I'd learnt C++: begin and end felt less "elite" than {}... I was 12 at the time, don't judge. Still... when I see Lua, Visual Basic or Julia even now I think: this is not going to make it, it doesn't stroke the programmers ego. I'll be happy to be proven wrong.
