  See also: amalgamation vs. amalgam. I hear people use amalgamation all the time, when the word they actually meant is amalgam, the result of amalgamation. However, language is democratic, and the preference of people like you and me will be pushed into the proverbial footnotes over centuries as similar sounding words amalgamate into synonyms. So why bother correcting people ;)
