Like some other commenters here, I don't think I've found any repetitive tasks that aren't scriptable. Aliases and functions handle every one of my use cases and they probably would handle OPs as well.
For example, he could install moeeutils and then just:
alias pre-commit='chronic cargo test& exa -l; wait'
If you really want splits, just spawn tmux with two panes using Tmuxinator, or:
pre-commit() {
tmux new-session \; \
send-keys 'cargo test || read' C-m \; \
split-window -v \; \
send-keys 'exa -l' C-m
}
Shell is powerful because of its compossibility, but if you don't choose to learn it then of course it feels clunky
- notriddle 5y agoNot knowing shell is hardly the reason I think it’s clunky, and probably not TFA’s reason. Just to list a few of my own grievances: * If you use tmux splitting, then mouse selection doesn’t always work right. * Data with embedded spaces is clunky. Data with embedded line breaks is almost unusable. It can be done, but it’s not the default. * A lot of work is done with little languages, like AWK, embedded in shell, requiring double-escaping.
