The best explanation I've come across so far on the existence and likely persistence of the NFT market is that its effectively a way to move money laundering through artworks online. The current offline art market essentially has the same characteristics (artificial value and scarcity and so on) but continues to exist through a mixture of rich people truly wanting to own the work for whatever reason and money laundering / tax-evasion needs.
