In higher level tech jobs, we struggle to find good metrics to measure performance, and then in jobs where it's easy to measure performance with a clear metric - using it is controversial. Maybe the lesson is that when a metric becomes tangible, expectations to meet/exceed those metrics becomes an all-encompassing aspect of the job.
