I'm german, and almost all of the mentioned words only exist in the imagination of the author. The only exception is "Covidiot", which is rarely used as a replacement for "Querdenker" (literally translated as cross-thinker, in the sense of non-logical, mostly emotionally guided being).
- Tomte 5y agoI agree that those terms cited are strange and pretty much on the same basis as any other compound word that I could make up on the spot. "Covidiot", though, is common, although derogative, so you'll see it on social media, but not in politician's speech or newspapers: https://twitter.com/search?q=lang%3Ade%20covidiot&src=typed_query https://twitter.com/search?q=lang%3Ade%20covidiot&src=typed_... The term trended many times on Twitter. "Querdenker" is a self-chosen label, where "quer" means "across the grain" or "orthogonal to common opinion", not "emotional". It is the accepted term, so you'll see that in reputable newspapers, as well. Another term for "Querdenker" would be "Leerdenker" ("empty thinker"), which again is derogative, and so mostly exists on social media again.
- xg15 5y agoWhat I find interesting, "Querdenker" has been their self-designation. I guess the name was supposed to have positive connotations, evoking images of free thinkers and resistance against authorities. The name definitely stuck, so I guess they archieved that goal - just the connotations aren't quite what they had hoped for, I believe...
