I recall after WW2 Japan was desperate for $$, so they had a huge export push. The trouble was crappy quality. Japanese and US industry suggested they adhere to the Deming quality control process, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W._Edwards_Deming https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W._Edwards_Deming
They did, as did Korea after them, but Taiwan and India did not. After a few years Japanese and Korean quality increased dramatically.
China is learning this lesson. After mosst buyers buy some disappointing crap on line, they shear away, and shift buying to transhippers who buy in bulk in China and warehouse in the USA. They soon come to grips and choke off the crap - some persists. I expect a lot of this decrease in online China purchases is due to this. China gets steadily better, year by year, so the USA rest of world need to smarten up.
The Chinese wage scale is so low by US standards that this is easy to win in this game. The Chinese currency needs to approach parity with the US$ in terms of same wages for same job. China deliberately keeps their currency down. Duties and the World Trade Org are gradually rectifying this. China now must pay developed country postage = a lot more than the underdeveloped country postage rate they had for a long time - this also explains the reduced imports..
