The Rocky Flats [FBI] Raid
- ttyprintk 5y agoThis is only the beginning of the story. Rockwell would eventually pay a fine that was less than its bonuses, making a profit on the coverup. The Colorado special grand jury is the real story. Foreman Wes McKinley, a rancher, would go to the media after hearing the case, and announce that the government was trying to subvert the grand jury’s recommendation for criminal charges against Rockwell executives. FBI agents involved in the case would eventually publicly support him.
- ttyprintk 5y agoThe public overwhelmingly supported criminal charges for officials and Rockwell executives. It appears that the Department of Justice was afraid those charged with environmental crime would testify about unapproved testing in settings where sloppiness with radiation is a crime. I recall that this all happened during an election campaign, and the major candidates didn’t want to appear anti-government, so they preferred not to talk about the coverup. Both Westword and the Boulder Weekly covered it well: https://web.archive.org/web/20120827190040/http://archive.boulderweekly.com/010605/coverstory.html https://web.archive.org/web/20120827190040/http://archive.bo...
