LLD is written in C++ and depends on LLVM (a massive C++ library). Zig's self-hosted linker has no C++ or LLVM dependency. One of the features of a compiler is how short the bootstrapping path is. C++ as part of the bootstrapping process is a failure of sorts. Furthermore, LLD doesn't support incremental compilation. It's just not fast enough for our compilation performance goals.
