I made something similar to this several years ago, and it was pretty usable considering that the software was thrown together in Python and the display I had did not support partial refresh. I got it so I could run terminal applications nicely, and even run X applications poorly. Then my little girl cut the pretty colored wires with scissors, and I didn't have the heart to do the hardware work over again. It wa a nice toy that might have become a good tool over time.
