- brundolf 5y agoWithout that word it sounds like it’s going to be a satire piece I wish HN would chill out with the auto-editorializing
- lmm 5y agoI wish HN would remove the user-submitted title box, since it just encourages you to put your heart and soul into something that then gets overwritten by the mods anyway.
- garmaine 5y agoSeriously, why is it there? What purpose does it serve?
- colejohnson66 5y agoAt least you can edit it after posting in order to correct it. But yes, why bother putting it if it’s just ignored?
- brundolf 5y agoI'm not sure they could automatically determine the title for every conceivable web page. There's the tab title, but that oftentimes isn't just the article title. For example it may be "The Website | The Article"
- slater 5y ago"please use the original title, unless it is misleading or linkbait; don't editorialize"
- slater 5y agoTo the downvoters: That's a direct copy/paste from the HN Guidelines: https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html
- klyrs 5y agoIt's easy to read that as snark, because that's what OP claims to have done.
- rvense 5y agoI think you mean "use the title, unless it is or; don't"
- slater 5y agoIt's direct copy-paste from the guidelines. Take it up with dang, not me.
- nyuszika7h 5y agoDo you understand what sarcasm is?
- Aissen 5y agoIMHO, this rule is important, but definitely simplistic. For instance, it's often important to contextualize; doing that without editorializing is subject to interpretation.
- 0xdeadb00f 5y agoPretty much. Many have complained about this. In fact I believe its one of the reasons lobste.rs exists
- fulafel 5y agoOr makes you feel frustrated when submitting when you conscientously obey the original title rule, which results in a bad title.

- boulos 5y agoTo be clear, I find the automatic edits to usually be useful. I left my comment to explain why I flagged the article (assuming 'dang looks at flagged posts and then has to wonder "Why is this flagged?").
- brundolf 5y agoI don't think that's a proper use of flagging: > What does [flagged] mean? > It means that users flagged a post as breaking the guidelines or otherwise not belonging on Hacker News.
- kroltan 5y agoYou could contrive that this breaks the "don't editorialize titles" guidelines, in the lack of a better option.
- 0des 5y agoIt means that N people worth X points more than you flagged it in a short span of time, so the site hides it unless someone vouches for you.
- AnimalMuppet 5y agoUnless you have "show dead" turned on, in which case you see it anyway. (You still can't comment on it, though.) And, if it's dead and you see it and you don't think it should be dead, you can "vouch" for it. If enough people do that, it can lift the "flagged" status.
- boulos 5y agoI actually unflag after corrections. I think one-off flagging doesn't end up triggering any badness for the poster (and the rules for comments vs posts are different). Only once enough people flag something does anything happen.

- 1vuio0pswjnm7 5y agoManual editorialising, too. (cf. correcting an error) Recent example: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28365163 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28365163 As a joke I was thinking about making a web page that automatically updates its <title> tag to match whatever title HN chooses for its corresponding thread on the HN front page. :)
- mulmen 5y agoThe best kind of joke is one that nobody gets.
- pjerem 5y agoYeah, when explaining the joke IS the joke. At least I’m self-sustaining when I need some laughs.
- dang 5y ago>> I wish HN would chill out with the auto-editorializing > Manual editorialising, too This is a classic sample-bias situation. The bad changes you notice stand out a lot more than the good changes you notice—or more likely, pass over without noticing. https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=true&query=by%3Adang%20dislike%20notice&sort=byDate&type=story&type=comment https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=true&que... If any of you know a strategy that's applicable in general, which would result in a better-quality front page over all, I'd love to hear it. This is a global optimization problem, though. You can't judge it by local failures, and (much as I wish otherwise!) batting 100 is not an option.
- 1vuio0pswjnm7 5y ago"If you know of any strategy which would result in a better-quality front page over all, I'd love to hear it." Thats a loaded question. :) The title issue is just a small annoyance, not an indicator of overall success, and it seems like there could be an easy fix. For example, a policy that submissions use the contents of <title> tag verbatim where possible. This should work for the majority of webpages. If not, I'd be interested in understanding why. I would think it would mean less work for a mod since then he does not have to entertain requests to change titles. Its arguable that any problem with a title (or the contents) of submitted webpage is a problem best addressed to the author of the page. Its not that I find editorialising titles offensive, its that there is an inconsistency of enforcement of the "HN rules" where HN users are scolded (not necessarily by a mod) for editorialising titles and then elsewhere titles are mysteriously changed for no stated reason. That rises to the level of an annoyance. We might think of it as curiousity. Users just want to understand how HN works. Maybe its impossible to be 100% consistent, and unreasonable to be expected to meet that bar, but when making (inevitable) exceptions perhaps its wise to be aware that sample bias will apply and explain why a title was changed. There might be good reasons for it. PS - Thanks for all the work you do.
- cpach 5y ago“I wish HN would chill out with the auto-editorializing” Feel free to send an e-mail to 'dang and bring it up. (The e-mail address is linked at the bottom of this page.) He’s very nice and approachable.
- chrismorgan 5y agoFYI: the original poster can immediately after submission edit it and fix the title, and HN will leave it alone the second time.
- brundolf 5y agoI think people often don't notice and then click away and go about their business. Nobody expects content they've just submitted to get silently changed under their nose.
- mlindner 5y agoIs there a way to ping dang so that he comes and fixes it? I wasn't aware HN did crazy shitty crap like this.
- pronoiac 5y agoThe "contact" link in the footer points to the mods' email address. I've dropped a line.
- isatty 5y agoI thought this was a way to get literally anything to the top of HN - add as much rust as possible.

- dang 5y agoSorry! Fixed entirely.
