Who had the Matrix screen saver back in the day?
I was in an open plan office at the time of about 30 desks. Every single one of the machines had this screen saver running.

- arthurcolle 5y agothere was 1 really good one that actually used characters instead of images (and those were all so terrible looking) that I've been searching for years (literally since 2005) - some motivated young child of Zion should use that notcurses lib posted yesterday and make a super high fidelity version. I've tried all the new ones and haven't found any that seem half-decent. Anyone know of any advancements in this sector?
- omoikane 5y agoI still have this: https://www.vim.org/scripts/script.php?script_id=1189 https://www.vim.org/scripts/script.php?script_id=1189
- yitchelle 5y agoNice that the instruction to exit is in the step-by-step.
- rezmason 5y agoDoes anyone mind if I peddle mine? Runs in the browser, lots of customizability: http://rezmason.github.io/matrix http://rezmason.github.io/matrix http://rezmason.github.io/matrix/?volumetric=true http://rezmason.github.io/matrix/?volumetric=true Forks, pull requests and feedback welcome! :) http://www.github.com/Rezmason/matrix http://www.github.com/Rezmason/matrix
- arthurcolle 5y agoNice work, I remember trying this a while back. Is there a way to increase the stream density on the volumetric version? By the way on the videos in the original post, they look extremely similar to your volumetric one! I know yours predates it - maybe you inspired the volumetric design in the new trailers!
- rezmason 5y agoThanks for expressing interest! You can use the "density" URL variable to multiply the number of volumetric raindrops, like so: https://rezmason.github.io/matrix/?volumetric=true&density=3.5 https://rezmason.github.io/matrix/?volumetric=true&density=3... The full list of parameters is in the README.md at: https://github.com/Rezmason/matrix#readme https://github.com/Rezmason/matrix#readme The similarities you point out are probably because of my recovery of the original font, which is also in the repo, and may soon need some expansion :D
- arthurcolle 5y agoI thought I remembered an issue on your repo where someone asked if there was a way to make it into a screensaver - am I misremembering, or was it removed? and out of curiosity - is that indeed possible or not? I scrolled through the README but maybe missed it. Thanks again!

- rezmason 5y agoYou might be remembering my "WebSaver" project, which I mainly use for my own Macs. https://github.com/Rezmason/websaver https://github.com/Rezmason/websaver

- rezmason 5y agoFun fact, xlockmore and xscreenSaver updated to include the Matrix effect on April 22nd and 27th 1999, respectively. That was less than a month after the 1999 film's release, and several months before it was available on VHS or DVD. So these folks based their screensavers off what they could remember from seeing it in theaters.
- handrous 5y agoIf I have a screensaver I want it to be that, or flying toasters. Not interested in anything else. No, not even Pipes or Starfield, as nostalgic as those are.
- skytreader 5y agoMaybe you're talking about Windows, I don't really know. But I gotta say, I wrestled through using Ubuntu ca. 2010s because they included a cool Matrix wallpaper by default. That's cooler than knowing how to quit vim.
