This is awesome and all, but I don't understand how it will support itself? Unlike Matrix which has plenty of money from government contracts (and venture capitalist money, which kinda sucks but whatever), I don't see how a centralised chat platform with video, voice, data rich messages, etc. relying on donations can support a large user base without one day compromising on privacy respecting data collection.
With Matrix, everyone can help share the load by setting up their own homeservers, if they want to. Plus, P2P is going to be part of the protocol at some point with embedded servers in the clients.
So what's the monetisation strategy? I wish they were more upfront about that, even if the answer was "we have no idea yet". And if the plan is not to monetise, an answer as to how a centralised server with high demand will keep up with capacity would be appreciated.
