The kernel does that too. Those key-value pairs are called "trailers", and are semi-standardized at https://git.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/CommitMessageConventions https://git.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/CommitMessageConventio...
The "git interpret-trailers" command exists to work with this kind of data.
