- lioeters 5y agoPromising start of an article about Beethoven, but it abruptly ended with: "Continue reading for just $1 an issue." --- > Should we think of music as a narrative that can also be expressed in words? Or does this betray the abstract, nonsemantic nature of musical thought? > ..Wagner claimed that Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, with its introduction of a chorus in the last movement, showed that the development of music could only be fulfilled if it was united with language, as in his own operas. For about a week, I've had in my head an on-going theme of thoughts, all about the relationship between music and language - sounds, words, and silence. Been writing a song called "Talk". ("Talk without talking / Walk without walking / And fly without even trying..") Then I came across a book titled, "Speaking the Piano". > "You must speak the piano." - Theodor Leschetizky to Artur Schnabel, as reported by Clifford Curzon A few days later, someone on HN commented with a poem called "The Quiet World", about the value of words and silence, about communicating without words.
