A meditation on three dead side projects
- martinmakesgame 5y agoHi Kenny, The motivations that you've talked about, learning or money and generating users, are these the only motivations when undertaking a side project? When thinking about a side project would you think about other motivations as well? Is there room for undertaking a side project where the aim isn't learning or money and users but instead there is a motivation to improve how the world is, making lives better for people?
- kenforthewin 5y agoThat's a great point. I think the difference I was trying to get at was between building for the sake of learning and building with the intention of the product being used by more than just you. But building for charitable purposes, or at least with the intent of helping others, is certainly distinct from any profit motive.
- victorthehuman 5y agoAs a creator with some dead project(s) I feel horrified when I think how many hours I “wasted” on them. But then again, I had to scratch those creative itches, I had to built those useless things, they made me what I’m today, a more experienced, tired and inching closer to a break from software engineering.
