It seems like they could've simplified their explanations about only Swiss law applying by simply recommending Swiss users go elsewhere.
It seems like the safest way to use email is to use email operated outside your own country.
- breakfastduck 5y agoI think you're misinterpreting. It doesn't matter where the user is from at all. They are obligated to disclose certain things if they get a request from the Swiss authorities, but it certainly does not only apply to people living in Switzerland. It simply means that if, lets say the US, govt makes a request, they are not obligated to comply unless they are specifically requested by the Swiss authorities.
- nucleogenesis 5y agoI think the French asked the Swiss to aid them in the investigation. Idk the whole story but I think it was to get some squatting climate activists (you know, super serious crimes…). The linked post by Proton suggests VPN and Tor usage for better anonymity.
- lucozade 5y agoI don't believe the person involved was Swiss. My understanding is that a request was made to the Swiss authorities by the French authorities. So, to avoid this, a user would need to not be accused of a crime in a country that is on speaking terms with Switzerland.
- kazen44 5y agowhich is basically all of the EU and surrounding countries. this has been the case for a very long time. (more then 80 years in the benelux for example).
