In the UK we often use liberal to mean anti-authoritarian, rather than in the sense American's use it to cover a broader set of economic structures, social beliefs and the level of government interference in the market and everyday life.
So while yes, I would agree that it would be strange to associate tripping with a singular political ideology in one sense, it could also follow that the experience is associated with a dissolution of boundaries that would tend to push people toward a political ideologies more associated with equal rights (https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fphar.2021.607529/ https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fphar.2021.6075...) for instance.
