Why does it need to be faster? You can get things done on a train. You're not personally liable for the maintenance. You don't have to park it when you get there. You don't need a security checkpoint. Good train service relies on other public transport but it's very different beast to either driving or air travel. Trying to compare solely on rolling time does the conversation a disservice.
