- bhickey 5y agoThe data has never supported that covid is less dangerous than flu in kids. In the first year about 300 children in the US died from covid. Social distancing collapsed flu cases nationwide. There was a single childhood flu death last season.
- bryan0 5y agoThis is not accurate. Covid IFR for children < 12 was near 0 in 2020 which is far less risky than flu for that group. https://ourworldindata.org/mortality-risk-covid https://ourworldindata.org/mortality-risk-covid > Our analysis finds a exponential relationship between age and IFR for COVID-19. The estimated age-specific IFR is very low for children and younger adults (e.g., 0.002% at age 10 and 0.01% at age 25) https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33289900/ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33289900/
- josephcsible 5y agoAre you arguing that COVID is more deadly in young people than the flu because its absolute number of deaths in young people was higher last year, without taking into account that the number of infections was higher too?
- manwe150 5y agoHe is arguing about the total fatality rate, rather than the IFR. It is feasible for those to go in different relative directions with a more infectious but less deadly disease.
- bhickey 5y agoYes, thank you. We need to look at the overall risk. To pick an extreme case: The unvaccinated IFR of rabies is close to one, but there hasn't been a rabies fatality in the US since 2018.
