Why the New York Subway Keeps Flooding–and What to Do About It
- aurizon 5y agoIt is not lack of money, it is lack of will. The political milieu prefers money to be spent into certain pockets, so the transit system is chronically starved of applied funds because most of the money spills into other people's pockets on it's way. Same with tunnels - they cost 3+ times much as in many other areas. https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2019/05/new-york-infrastructure-costs.html https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2019/05/new-york-infrastruct...
- Finnucane 5y agoObviously the problem is that they’re underground. Raise the tunnels up so they’re over the street level.
- simonblack 5y agoWell, "Duh!". Tunnels are wonderful, they keep stuff from getting in the way on the surface. But, in most places, they sit below the water table, or below access from sea, rivers, or storm water and naturally they tend to fill up. Usually the pumps, that are working away on an continuous basis, can keep in front of water ingress so we don't notice that the tunnels would normally be flooded all the time. It's only when the pumps break down, or they get swamped by sudden water flows, that we suddenly get to scream about the normal state of affairs.
