Whether or not it will succeed as a gaming platform, I think the Deck looks interesting as a piece of hardware. I was ready to reserve one during the previous round of hype, but held off for now when I saw "Expected order availability: After Q2 2022" (previously the 512GB one was Q3 2022, referring to https://store.steampowered.com/steamdeck https://store.steampowered.com/steamdeck ) after they'd claimed it'd be ready by the holidays this year. Bit of a red flag for me.
(I also snagged a Steam Link when they were on sale for like $3 before they stopped selling them. I think likewise that was neat to think of as a little Linux computer.)
- Tarsul 5y agoPeople who preordered when preorders went live are still on the list for December 2021 or Q1 2022 (mine is for Q1 but I was an hour late with my preorder and in Europe), so it's simply that those who came late will get it later.
- the_biot 5y agoSame -- I'm not a gamer at all, though I'm keen to try if it doesn't involve running windows or dealing with consoles. But I ordered one because I suspect the platform will turn out to be popular for all sorts of things not related to gaming at all. It's a really capable Linux PC with a neat form factor, good display and lots of controls. Worst case scenario, it'll make a great present for a gamer, as it looks like it'll be scarce for a while :-)
